Recent activities by ECEB Faculty Members:

 

  • October 3, 2006: Drs. Kerschberg, Kim and Scime awarded Patent Number 7,117,207, "Personalized Semantic Taxonomy-Based Search Agent."

    The abstract of the patent is as follows:
    Disclosed is a search mechanism comprising: accepting search intent information from a user having a search intent; creating a semantic taxonomy tree having term(s) representative of the search intent information; augmenting the term(s) with associated concepts derived from the term(s) using existing terminological data; associating a weight with at least one of the term(s); obtaining user preference intent; determining root term(s); transforming the semantic taxonomy tree to a Boolean search query; submitting the Boolean search query to searcher(s); receiving at least one search result(s); interpreting the search result(s); requesting page(s) specified the search result(s); receiving the page(s); generating ranked results; presenting the ranked results to the user; presenting the semantic taxonomy tree to the user; accepting user feedback from the user; and using the user feedback to update the user preference intent.

  • September, 2006: The ECEB welcomes Dr. Yong Uk Song of Yonsei University in Korea. Dr. Song is spending his sabbatical year with the E-Center for E-Business and the Department of Information and Software Engineering.

  • March 19, 2006: The charter for the E-Center for E-Business has been renewed for a period of five years, until 2011!

  • March 16, 2006: The Center welcomes its newest member, Dr. Xinyuan (Frank) Wang. Dr. Wang’s research is in the area of Network Security. His recent work on Voice over IP watermarking has received considerable media attention.

  • March 4, 2006: We are pleased to welcome Dr. Duminda Wijesekera to the ECEB. His research interests include: his research interests include security, multimedia, networks, secure signaling (telecom, railway and SCADA), avionics, missile systems, web and theoretical computer science.

  • February 12, 2006: We extend a warm welcome to the newest faculty member of the Center, Dr. Jon Whittle, Associate Professor of Information and Software Engineering. Dr. Whittle’s research is in the general area of software engineering, and in particular, the modeling of complex, software-intensive systems.

  • The E-Center for E-Business welcomes two new faculty members, Professors Carlotta Domeniconi and Jessica Lin. They are both active in the areas of data mining, text analysis and time series analysis.

  • Dr. Menascé has accepted an appointment as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering, effective September 1, 2005.  He will not serve as Co-Director during his tenure as Associate Dean.  Dr. Kerschberg will serve as Director of the ECEB.

  • Dr. Menascé gave two invited talks during a trip to Europe:
    • "Achieving QoS in Complex Distributed Systems through Autonomic Computing," Alcatel Technical Academy, Antwerp, Belgium, October 3, 2005.
    • "Quality of Service Challenges for Web Based Systems and E-commerce," keynote address, Kick-off meeting of the E-Quality Research Center, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands, September 30, 2005.

  • Dr. Menascé gave the invited talk “Quality of Service Aspects and Metrics in Grid Computing”, at the NY Computer Measurement Group, New York, NY, February 11, 2005.

  • Dr. Menascé has been invited to become a Member of the Editorial Board, ACM Transactions on the Web (TWEB), September 2005-present.

  • Dr. Menascé presented the 3-hour tutorial “Fundamental Concepts in Performance Engineering, at the 2004 Computer Measurement Group Conference, Las Vegas, NV, December 5, 2004.
  • Dr. Kerschberg was the Keynote Speaker, “Just-in-Time Knowledge Management,” Conference on Professional Knowledge Management, Kaiserslautern, Germany, April 10-13, 2005.

  • Drs. Menascé and Barbará received a Best Paper Finalist award with their paper "Fractal Characterization of Web Workloads," published in the Proceedings of the WWW 2002 Conference, Web-Engineering Track, Honolulu, Hawaii, May 7-11, 2002. Other authors of the paper include B. Abrahao, V. Almeida, and F. Ribeiro from the UGMG, Brazil.

  • Dr. Menascé has been invited to be a regular contributor to the magazine Internet Computing, writing a column called "Scaling the Web."

  • Dr. Menascé became an Associate Editor of the journal Electronic Commerce Research and Applications.

  • Dr. Kerschberg served as Guest Editor for a Special Issue on Scientific Databases, for the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems.  He is also an Editor-in-Chief for the journal.

  • The E-Center for E-Business is proud to be a sponsor of the International Workshop on Cooperative Information Agents.

  • Dr. Menascé received the  A. A. Michelson award from the Computer Measurement Group on December 3, 2001. This is a  lifetime achievement award given in recognition of "outstanding contributions to computer metrics."

  • Dr. Menascé, gave the 3-hour tutorial "Technologies for Scaling Web Services" at the 2001 CMG Conference, Anaheim, CA on December 2, 2001.

  • On December 19, 2001, Dr. Kerschberg participated, via the Internet, in the "Distance Collaborative Seminar among Kyoto University, Kansai University and George Mason University".  The seminar was hosted by Dr. Yahiko Kambayashi of Kyoto University and Dr. Shinichi Ueshima of Kansai University. Both Kyoto and Kansai Universities were linked by satellite, while GMU was linked via the Internet and NetMeeting.

  • Dr. Kerschberg traveled to Japan during November 22 - December 6, 2001 to attend ER 2001 and WISE 2001 Conferences held at Yokohama and Kyoto, respectively.  He also visited Kansai University in Osaka, Japan and delivered a lecture on the WebSifter Project.

    • At ER 2001, Dr. Kerschberg presented a tutorial on Knowledge Management for E-Business and participated in a Panel entitled "Semantic B2B Integration: Is Modeling the Superior Approach over Programming."  The slides for the panel can be viewed here.

    • At the Web Information Systems Engineering (WISE) Conference, Dr. Kerschberg presented a paper entitled "A Semantic Taxonomy-Based Personalizable Meta-Search Agent" co-authored with  Professors Wooju Kim and Anthony Scime.  He also delivered a tutorial entitled "Agent-Based Web Services for E-Business."
  • Dr. Menascé presented "QoS Issues in Web and E-commerce Services,"  in the Distinguished Lecture Series, Computer Science and Engineering Division, at the University of Michigan on October 25, 2001.

  • Dr. Menascé chaired a panel discussion on E-Commerce Education at the 2001 ACM Conference on E-Commerce, Tampa, Florida, October 16, 2001.

  • Dr. Menascé presented the keynote address, "Using Performance Models to Dynamically Control E-Commerce Performance," at the 2001 Aachen International Multiconference on Measurement, Modelling, and Evaluation of Computer-Communication Systems, Aachen, Germany, September 12, 2001.

  • Dr. Kerschberg presented the keynote address, "Knowledge Management in Heterogeneous Data Warehouse Environments," at the International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery, Munich Germany, September 6, 2001.

  • Dr. Menascé's new book titled "Capacity Planning for Web Services," has been published by Prentice Hall, September 2001.

  • Dr. Menascé was an invited speaker at the panel "Server Performance Modeling and Tuning" at OPNETWork 2001, Washington, D. C., August 29, 2001.

  • Professors Ravi Sandhu, Edgar Sibley and Larry Kerschberg presented a talk entitled "Secure Objects in E-Business Environments," at the Technology Seminar Series of the National Reconnaissance Office, in Chantilly, Virginia, July 31, 2001. 

  • Dr. Kerschberg served as Program Chair for the International Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management, held at George Mason University's Fairfax Campus, 18-20 July 2001.  The event was sponsored by the E-Center for E-Business and the Center for Earth Observing and Space Research. 

  • Dr. Menascé gave a talk "Understanding Workloads in E-Business," at Microsoft Research in Seattle, WA on May 1, 2001.

Doctoral Dissertations for Students Associated with the ECEB

  • Dr. Monchai Sopitkamol defended his Ph.D. dissertation, "Experimental Study of Performance Sensitivity of Configurable Parameters of Web-based Systems," November 2004. His advisor was Dr. Menascé.

  • Dr. Randy Howard defended his his Ph.D. dissertation “A Knowledge-Based Framework for Dynamic Semantic Web Services within Virtual Organizations” in October 2004.  His advisor was Dr. Kerschberg.

  • Dr. Riki Morikawa defended his Ph.D. dissertation “A Framework for an Analytical Knowledge Base that Combines XML Topic Maps, Bayesian Networks, and the Concept of Network Scenarios for Enhanced Knowledge Sharing” in July 2004. His advisor was Dr. Kerschberg.
  • Dr. Ibrahim S. Abdullah defended his Ph.D. dissertation, "Meta-Protocol: On-the-fly Protocol Agreement and Code Generation," March 2004. His advisor was Dr. Menascé.

  • Willa Pickering, “Assessing the Role and Conduct of Online Collaborative Projects in E-Learning”, July 24, 2003, now at Lockheed Martin Corporation. Dr. Kerschberg was her advisor.

  • Dr. Harry Foxwell defended his Ph.D. dissertation “A Web-based System for Representing, Retrieving, and Visualizing Analogies” in April 2003. His advisor was Dr. Menascé.
  • Dr. Alan Harbitter defended his Ph.D. dissertation  "A Methodology for Analyzing the Performance of Authentication Protocols" in  November 2001. His advisor was Dr. Menascé.

  • Dr. Ron Dodge, Jr. defended his PhD Dissertation entitled "Improving E-commerce System Performance with Dynamic System Tuning," April 2001.  Professors Menascé and Barbará were co-advisors to Dr. Dodge.

The ECEB Infrastructure Grant Award

  • The Virginia Center for Innovative Technology has awarded the ECEB a $75,000 Infrastructure Award, for the period July 15, 2000 to July 14, 2001.
  • Industry matching funds from ECEB Members total $55,000.
